Preheat oven to 425°. Mix all dry ingredients together. Cut shortening into dry mixture until it resembles fine crumbs. Add milk; stir gently until the dough holds together. Turn onto lightly floured board and knead about 12 strokes. Do not overwork the dough. Just roll it into balls using your hands or use a rolling pin. Arrange biscuits about 1 inch apart on a baking sheet; bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
