Frequently Asked Questions

Short, honest answers about using Foodgeist. For cooking-science questions, use Ask Geist.

Product

What is Foodgeist?+
Foodgeist is a continuously-updating, independently-verified knowledge graph of food — every technique, ingredient, recipe, industrial process, and flavor compound we can reliably reference, connected by molecular evidence and audited in real time. Ask it anything about cooking science and it answers with citations, not vibes.
How is this different from ChatGPT or Perplexity?+
Foodgeist is food-specialized and cites its sources back to primary data (USDA, PubChem, ChEBI, 21 national food databases). General LLMs answer fluently but cannot tell you which peer-reviewed paper a claim came from, and they hallucinate compound identifiers. Foodgeist refuses to guess — if a fact isn't sourced, it says so.
Who is Foodgeist for?+
Professional chefs, recipe developers, food scientists, product engineers, curious home cooks, and students. If you ask "why does this work" more than "what's the next step," this is built for you.
Where does the data come from?+
Thirty-plus open, authoritative sources — USDA FoodData Central, Wikipedia, Wikidata, PubChem, ChEBI, OpenAlex, PubMed, 21 national food databases (CIQUAL, CNF, NUTTAB, Frida, and others), EFSA, Codex Alimentarius, BitterDB, FooDB, Phenol-Explorer, FlavorDB2, and live trend crawlers. Every row preserves its source and license.
How is the data verified?+
An adversarial verification pipeline — the only published food-data verification methodology — challenges every claim before it enters the graph. Ground-truth checks against PubChem and ChEBI run every 10 minutes. An independent audit process re-challenges the existing corpus every 15 minutes. Entries that fail are flagged or removed.
How often is the data updated?+
Continuously. New entries flow in from importers every 5 minutes; the viral nexus crawls 25+ sources every 2 hours; enrichment runs every 10 minutes; audits every 15. On any given day thousands of fields change.
Can I trust it for professional decisions?+
Foodgeist aims for primary-source accuracy, but we do not warrant that every claim is error-free. For high-stakes work (allergens, dietary compliance, commercial formulations, medical), verify against primary sources before acting. The platform surfaces source IDs and uncertainty flags specifically so you can check.

Ask Geist

How do turns work?+
One turn = one message you send. Apprentice (free) gets 5 turns/day without an account, 20/day signed in. Gastronome gets 100/day. Laboratory gets 500/day. Daily counts reset at UTC midnight.
Why did I hit "cap reached"?+
You used your daily turns. The counter resets at UTC midnight, or you can upgrade from the inline card to get a higher cap immediately (no re-login needed).
Can I see my past conversations?+
Yes. Every conversation is saved to your account. Apprentice-tier conversations are kept for 7 days, then hard-deleted. Gastronome, Laboratory, and Enterprise conversations are kept indefinitely. You can delete any conversation yourself at any time.
Does the Geist remember me across conversations?+
No — deliberately. Each conversation is isolated. Resuming a saved chat loads only that chat's messages; nothing leaks between conversations. This eliminates a class of hallucination and privacy risks that come with persistent cross-session memory.
Can I share an answer publicly?+
Every answer has Copy, WhatsApp, and Email share built in — free on all tiers. Public share links (a URL anyone can open) require a Gastronome or higher plan. Every share is sanitized before it leaves your account; if an answer referenced private context, sharing is refused.
How do voice calls with the Geist work?+
Laboratory subscribers can call the Geist from the Ask page — click the ☎ button, grant microphone access, and you're talking to a live AI food scientist within seconds. Laboratory includes 200 minutes/month; each call is capped at 60 minutes. Transcripts save to your conversation history. Need more minutes? Email ricardo.yudi@gmail.com.
What is Mad Chemist?+
Mad Chemist generates never-before-seen recipes by finding molecular bridges between ingredients — shared flavor compounds that make unlikely pairings work. Laboratory subscribers can generate up to 30 experiments per day. Reading existing experiment pages is free for everyone.

Pricing & billing

What do the tiers include?+
Apprentice (free): 20 turns/day, 7-day conversation history, read-only browsing. Gastronome ($15/mo · $150/yr): 100 turns/day, permanent conversation history, inline citations, Ficha Técnica exports, public share links, tagged collections. Laboratory ($35/mo · $350/yr): everything in Gastronome + live voice calls with the Geist (200 min/mo), Mad Chemist (generate 30 experiments/day), side-by-side comparisons, 500 turns/day, full Nexus dashboard. Enterprise (contact us): commercial dataset license, bulk API, team seats, white-label, custom scope.
How do refunds work?+
Full refund within 7 days of your first charge on Gastronome or Laboratory (monthly or annual), for any reason. Email refunds@foodgeist.app with your Stripe receipt; refunds process within 3 business days. EU/UK residents retain the 14-day statutory cooling-off right. After 7 days, or on subsequent billing cycles, payments are non-refundable — you keep access until the end of the paid period.
Can I cancel anytime?+
Yes. Cancel from your Profile → Manage Subscription. Access continues until the end of the paid period, then reverts to Apprentice (free). No cancellation fee, no retention tricks, no prorated refunds after the 7-day window.
Can I pause my subscription?+
Yes — up to 3 months. Pause from Profile → Manage Subscription. Useful for seasonal kitchens or sabbaticals. Resume anytime.
Why is there no lifetime tier?+
Running Foodgeist's continuous verification pipeline costs real money every day — LLM calls, database, crawls. A one-time payment would mathematically guarantee future operating losses, and I'd rather keep the lights on than vanish in 18 months. The referral program ($5 credit per paying referee) replaces the lifetime deal.
Do you offer team plans?+
Team seats are an Enterprise feature. Email ricardo.yudi@gmail.com with your team size, volume, and timeline — we'll scope a custom plan.

Account & data

How do I sign in?+
Three options: email + password, magic link, or (coming soon on iOS) Apple Sign-In. All three work on the same account. Email + password is the default for returning users.
I forgot my password.+
On the sign-in page, click "Forgot password?" and we'll email a reset link. Links expire in 1 hour.
How do I delete my account?+
Profile → Danger zone → Request deletion. That sends an email we process within 7 days. All your conversations, preferences, and account data are hard-deleted. Exported documents you already downloaded remain yours.
Can I export my data?+
Yes. Apprentice accounts can preview exports on the free-sample rows. Gastronome and Laboratory plans unlock full Ficha Técnica exports in PDF, Markdown, JSON, and CSV formats (including Meez and Apicbase). A full-account data export is available on request — email ricardo.yudi@gmail.com.
Which languages does Foodgeist speak?+
English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese. The interface, Geist responses, and content library all follow your language. Set it from the globe icon in the top nav; your choice persists across devices.

Privacy & security

Is my chat private?+
Yes. Your conversations are stored under row-level security that only you (and, on service-role lookups, our verification pipeline for abuse signals) can read. They are never shown to other users and never sold.
Do you train AI on my conversations?+
No. We do not fine-tune models on user chats. The underlying LLM provider (OpenRouter / Anthropic / Google / Groq) has its own policies; see their terms. Foodgeist itself never exports conversation content to training pipelines.
How do I make a GDPR data request?+
Email ricardo.yudi@gmail.com from your account email. Access or deletion requests are processed within 30 days; most within 7.

API & technical

Is there an API?+
The API spec is public at foodgeist.app/openapi.json · docs at foodgeist.app/api-docs. Production API access (with keys + quotas) is an Enterprise feature — email ricardo.yudi@gmail.com with your volume and use case to scope a custom plan.
Can I embed Foodgeist in my app?+
Enterprise plans include a white-label option with embeddable components and custom-scoped API access. Email ricardo.yudi@gmail.com to discuss.

Mission

Is Foodgeist a company or a solo project?+
One food geek, out in the open. The autonomous pipelines, SOTA agent, and verification system do most of the continuous work; a human drives the direction and the polish. That is deliberately the whole brand.
How do I report an issue or suggest a feature?+
On any Geist answer, tap the 🚩 flag button — it files a ticket directly. For broader feedback, email ricardo.yudi@gmail.com. Every ticket is read.
Is there a referral program?+
Yes. Share foodgeist.app/r/YOUR_CODE (from Profile) — when a referee subscribes for 30 days, you earn $5 Stripe credit. Up to 5 grants per 90 days; auto-clawback if the referee refunds.
