Beat butter until fluffy. Add sugar gradually, beating constantly, then beat some more. Add eggs, one at a time. Beat well after each addition. Dissolve soda in water. Add to 1/2 cup buttermilk. Add 1 cup flour alternately with milk/soda mixture. Beat well. Add remaining flour and milk alternately. Blend well. Add vanilla. Grease only bottom of pan. Bake in tube pan at 325° for 1 1/2 hours. (Stick spatula every 1/2-inch vertically into batter to remove air bubbles.)
