Saute onion in margarine. Salt chopped onion. Place colander inside mixing bowl. Chop tomatoes with pastry cutter or knife, letting juice fall into bowl. Add chilies to tomatoes and stir. Place chilies and tomatoes in 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Add onion and cheese. Bake until cheese melts (about 1 hour). Baking can be sped up by preheating in microwave. Dip or spoon mixture onto tortilla chips or pita bread and top with sour cream.
