thoroughly rinse the basil, then cut the stalk in half lengthways. combine the sugar, water, and basil in a small saucepan and heat on medium. when the sugar dissolves and the water starts to boil, remove from the heat, and let sit for about 3 minutes. strain in a colander, then chill in the refrigerator. (you should have 150 ml of syrup.) squeeze the lemons, and remove the seeds. it's actually quite tasty if a little of the pulp gets into the juice. put the ice in a pitcher, slowly pour in the lemon juice, basil syrup, and carbonated water and stir. pour into individual cups.
